‘Home and Away’ Grappenhall at War 1914 – 1918
Saturday 15th November 11am to 4pm
In the Olde Barn Grappenhall Community Centre
Café open all day serving home bakes, teas and coffees.
An exhibition depicting what life was like for those living in Grappenhall and Thelwall during the years 1914 – 1918 while the men were away fighting and what life was like for the men who were away fighting in the trenches of France. The aim of the event is to commemorate the contribution of those that served on our behalf, regardless of whether or not they returned home.
The event is being organised in conjunction with The Grappenhall Library and the Grappenhall Local History Group, but will also feature exhibits from Grappenhall Pre-school, St Wilfrid’s Primary School, St Wilfrid’s Church and other local organisations.
The Olde Barn will be suitably decorated with vintage bunting, WW1 posters and newspaper cuttings. There will be displays of mementos and artefacts (kindly loaned by local residents) including maps and medals. Transcripts of interviews held with elderly members of the community who have had memories handed down to them through their family. Grappenhall Local History Group will give an illustrated talk and have annotated photographs with short stories on view with a roll call of the known inhabitants who went to fight and also those who failed to return, together with photos of war graves and memorials both here and in France. During the afternoon there will be readings from Diaries at the time, finishing with a concert of WW1 songs.
We would welcome input from any members of the community who have memories they would like recorded or artefacts that they could either loan or have photographed for this event.
